As a coach you try to put them in position to make plays and impact the game. Typically those kinds of tweaks are reserved for the most talented players. The Raiders’ defense is currently in the process of finding their best players. They are looking for outspoken leaders and foundation players. Early returns from training camp has Johnathan Abram with a commanding lead in the outspoken department. The rookie 27th overall pick safety has quickly earned a reputation as a talker. Uncharacteristic so for a rookie in his first training camp. For his part, his play on the field is just as aggressive as his words. He is eager and hungry. And he’s a thumper. Making it hard for him to abide by the strict CBA rules that don’t allow for pads throughout the offseason when he wanted to get to hitting. We’ve now had two days of hitting at training camp and Abram is way past ready for it. He’s already earned a nickname — given to him by Special Teams Coordinator Rich Bisaccia — along with the respect of his teammates.“Oh, Bulldog? Yeah, bulldog has been great. Bulldog been great,” said fellow rookie top pick Clelin Ferrell. “He don’t take no stuff from nobody. He’s not afraid to speak his mind even though some of it be crazy coming out of his mouth, but it’s been real good.”No player on this defense is more known for their hard-hitting than veteran linebacker Vontaze Burfict — even to the point of crossing the line quite often and earning flags, fines, and suspensions. Abram reminds him a lot of himself.“He talks a little bit more than me though. Sometimes we got to tell him to shut up in the huddle but other than that, yeah, he backs it up,” Burfict said of Abram. “So https://www.raiderslockerroom.com/authentic-derek-carr-jersey , you can talk as much as you want as long as you back it up.”Knowing what kind of player Burfict is, it says a lot that even he has to tell Abram to cool it sometimes.“Abram is so aggressive, sometimes I have to tell him like, ‘hey you’ve got to hold it back a little bit, you know, we’re on the same team,’” said Burfict. “He keeps ragging when the Rams come in he doesn’t care. So, you know, he’s young, he’s talented, aggressive, and I can’t wait to see him play on Sundays.”Jon Gruden has raved about Abram since they drafted him and throughout the offseason. But he is finding it a chore to rein in the overzealous rookie.“That kid’s something else,” Gruden said after Tuesday’s camp practice. “I don’t want to make comparisons but he’s what we’re looking for. He’s a versatile guy that gives us so much energy on defense. And we have tried to control him. He’s hitting too many of our guys in shorts. He even hit some coaches the other day by accident.”Abram downplays the idea that he is going too hard after his own teammates, saying he’s “not out here trying to kill nobody Derek Carr Jersey White ,” adding that he’s “just trying to make a couple plays on the ball just like [the other guy] is.”Abram also sees the similarities to his approach and Burfict’s. That comparison is a double edged sword Abram must be careful with.“Because he’s a violent hitter. That’s the rep I get,” Abram said of he and Burfict. “But there’s more to it than that. I’m a hot head at times but that’s the one thing we talk about; controlling my emotions, being passionate not emotional.”Talking and hitting wasn’t going to earn Abram a spot with the first team; a spot he took by the end of OTA’s. He had to be a fast learner for that.Returning safety Erik Harris had been lining up with the first team for much of the offseason and he is a very intelligent player in his own rite. Abram had to show Jon Gruden and Paul Guenther that he had picked up the playbook before he stepped in with the first team. It’s a credit to Abram’s intelligence that he was able to get on the field, but it’s more than that. Paul Guenther has tweaked his defense scheme to cater to his and Karl Joseph’s aggressive styles. And you can add Erik Harris to that as well. There’s plenty of reason to be excited when it comes to Abram. He has all the intangibles. The intelligence, the passion, the leadership, and the raw talent. He doesn’t believe in the concept of being a rookie. He sees himself as a “first year player” instead. Whatever you want to call it, he still has a lot to learn to refine all his hair-on-fire abilities at the NFL level. Most importantly, to keep them within the NFL rulebooks. If he can, watch out. Either way, watch out. He’s coming. And not quietly.Follow @LeviDamien With 4 starters not practicing, the Colts have caught the injury bug at the right time if you’re a Raiders fan. The defense is especially banged up with 2017 first round pick FS Malik Hooker out with a knee injury and starters MLB Darius Leonard and CB Pierre Desir yet to practice this week. The Raiders really need to get their offense jumpstarted so this could be the perfect week to do so. Let’s take a look at how the Raiders can attack the Colts this weekend.Getting playmakers going on offenseThe Raiders selected Josh Jacobs in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. With the Colts favoring to go with an undersized pass rushing front seven, now is the time to lean on Jacobs and pound the rock. The Titans had success running the ball with another Alabama running back and Derrick Henry had a big game on the ground against this Colts defense. Through 3 games the Indianapolis defense has allowed 114 yards per game and a healthy 5.3 yards per carry. Week 1 against the Chargers, running back Austin Ekeler had a career day amassing almost 200 yards of total offense and 3 touchdowns. Ekeler had close to 100 yards receiving and the Colts defense had a hard time tracking him down on screens and passes out of the backfield. Josh Jacobs was known for this in college. Jalen Richard was priority tendered mostly for his receiving chops. Everyone has been clamoring for the Raiders to pass to their backs more often. This is the week it needs to happen. The only consistent playmaker in the Raiders offense is tight end Darren Waller. Waller leads the NFL in targets amongst tight ends with 26 and is currently 3rd in yards with 267. Waller will benefit from a heavy dose of the ground game by taking advantage of an aggressive Colts defense like on the play above. Watch how the linebackers get sucked in on the play-action and let Austin Hooper run open down the seam. The Colts defense is giving up plenty of yards to tight ends according to fantasy outlets so at the very least this should be another productive game for Waller.Making the Colts offense one dimensionalAfter going up agains the NFL’s leading rusher last week Antonio Brown Raiders Jersey , the Raiders don’t get much of a break in week 4 going up against the 3rd leading rusher in Marlon Mack. Mack is a very good back but maybe not the elite talent that Dalvin Cook was last week in Minnesota. The edge Mack has, however, is an incredible offensive line that can block any scheme. The Raiders will have their hands full bottling up this rushing attack. But if they can, it will limit what the offense can call in the passing game. Many thought the season was lost for the Colts after the sudden retirement of Andrew Luck. With a savvy play caller like Frank Reich however, now starting Jacoby Brissett has allowed Colts fans to lay off the panic button.Brissett makes a good throw here but check out the design. A RB motions out wide as the ball is snapped. The slot receiver takes an outside release and keeps his shoulders square breaking down slightly at the same time Brissett pump fakes to the running back in the flat. This freezes the slot defender just long enough for a touchdown pass to go over his head. The Raiders defense has struggled with this type of play, especially in week 2 when the Chiefs scored on an almost identical look. If the defense can limit the big plays they have a good chance of winning this football game. The Titans did the best job of stopping the run against the Colts and had the offense in plenty of 3rd and long situations. As a result, Jacoby Brissett had to hold the ball longer and was susceptible to negative plays. (one was Brissett sliding while still in the backfield) and intercepted him once. All of these plays came in 3rd and long situations. Stop the run. Make Brissett play big league QB, and the defense will have a chance to do the same.NotesThe Colts main receiver T.Y. Hilton also missed practice this week and is doubtful for the game. After Hilton, the next most productive wide receiver on the roster is rookie Parris Campbell with 5 receptions for 37 yards. With T.Y. Hilton’s status up in the air, the Colts will lean on Tight Ends Eric Ebron and Jack Doyle. Both of these tight ends tore the Raiders defense apart last season with Andrew Luck at the helm. Let’s see what Guenther cooks up to cover the post players.Derek Carr and the offense are coming off a pair of uninspiring performances. With the Colts defense suffering so many injuries and lost practice time as a result, if they don’t have a good week there will be little hope for the offense 2019.
